Astrid Nobel – ‘De Waddenzee’, 2025
“De Waddenzee” was created during a three-month artist residency on the Wadden Sea dike near Het Lage
Noorden. The painting uses a variety of materials and waters from the Wadden Sea region.
In the background, a tidal inlet with creeks and exposed sandbanks is incorporated, creating
simultaneous high and low tides. The waves are typical Wadden Sea waves flowing sideways.
The shape of the cosmic arcs is derived from the subsidence basin near Het Oerd on Ameland and
filled with pigment from replenishment sand. The tide line in front incorporates animal bones and skulls and
driftwood. This tide line will be different each time.
The residency was made possible by the Mondriaan Fund.
