Thijs Linssen and Frank Halmans

Under the title ‘Ondertussen’ (Meanwhile) Art Gallery O-68 shows works by Thijs Linssen (videos, location-specific installations, small sculptures and photography) and Frank Halmans (installations) from Sunday December 8, 2024 to Sunday January 12, 2025.  An exhibition about time, its passage, objects we use, memory, and mental wanderings.

Thijs Linssen (1987) captures fleeting moments and desires in videos, location-specific installations, small images and photography. These moments and desires often refer to the past and evoke associated feelings and thoughts. They have their origins in personal sources. Linssen believes it is important that people can recognize something about themselves and/or others in his work. That is why he uses everyday elements that resonate in the collective memory, such as a sunset, the weather, cigarettes, clocks, packed cars, a studio and football. Slowing down, stopping, speeding up or marking the duration of a certain thing, and the experience of this, are recurring motifs in his work. During the exhibition ‘Ondertussen’, Thijs Linssen shows new works and older works that have not been exhibited before. These works together do not form one concrete idea, but each offer their own suggestion.

The work of Frank Halmans (1963) takes place in the border area between waking and sleeping. In the slumber area of staring, dreaming and musing. It is the area where the wealth of space in the head can be optimally used. Many of his works feature everyday objects and parts of architecture. The function or form of this can lead to exaggeration or distortion of meaning. Sometimes the objects even take on human characteristics and seem to be animated with a will of their own. Despite this theme of the fleeting and elusive, Halmans’ images are sometimes very physically present. They are therefore concrete places or starting points. They are the physical starting point of a mental wandering.
