Solo exhibition Tony Dočekal
Art Gallery O-68 presents the solo exhibition ‘The Living Road’ with work by Tony Dočekal (photography and video) from December 3 to December 10, 2023. On Sunday, December 3, the opening of the exhibition is from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. This exhibition is part of the presentation of the Burgemeester de Bruijn Prijs 2023, which has been awarded to Tony and will be presented on December 1 by the mayor of Rheden.
With the American West as a backdrop, Tony explored the challenges of a nomadic existence. Her works focus on people who move off the beaten track. Despite the aesthetics of her photography, it never hides the underlying problems of poverty, homelessness and inequality. Tony explores the influence of social and economic forces on identity. The thoughtful process of analog photography requires time and peace and allows her to form a connection with the subjects. They are not ‘the others’ for Tony; she recognizes herself in their search and therefore comes close.
The exhibition ‘The Living Road’, with work from the past three years, is about the search for adulthood in today’s society with its many expectations and challenges: a journey to your physical or inner ‘home’. The exhibition – which, in addition to color photography, also shows a video work for the first time – questions conventions about what you must comply with to participate or not in today’s society, and invites the viewer to introspect about what their own ‘home’ is.
Tony Dočekal works and exhibits at home and abroad, has a BA in Fine Arts from Artez, University of Art Arnhem, and has received the Olympus Young Talent Award, Silver Camera Portrait and nominations for the SO Award (from the trade union for professional photography Dupho.) for her photography.
